What is the Pomodoro Technique?
The Pomodoro Technique is an incredibly popular time management method developed by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s. It uses a timer to break down work into intervals, traditionally 25 minutes in length, separated by short breaks. Each of these intervals is known as a pomodoro, from the Italian word for 'tomato'. The underlying philosophy is that frequent breaks improve mental agility, prevent burnout, and drastically increase your overall productivity during the focused intervals.
Our completely free, browser-based Pomodoro Timer automates this entire process for you so you can shut off distractions and enter a flow state.
How to Use the Timer
Using the AllTools Pomodoro Timer is designed to be frictionless:
- Start Focusing: Click the primary "Start" button. The timer will begin counting down from 25 minutes. During this period, commit yourself entirely to one specific task. No phones, no social media.
- Take a Break: When the 25 minutes expire, the timer ring will turn green, indicating your 5-minute break has automatically begun. Stand up, stretch, and get a glass of water.
- Customize Your Flow: If 25 minutes feels too short or long, use the "Timer Settings" panel below the controls to adjust the Focus Duration and Break Duration to match your personal scientifically optimal work cycle (such as the 50/10 split).
- Skip & Reset: If you finish a task early or need to abruptly start a break, use the "Skip" button to instantly toggle between Focus Mode and Break Mode. The "Reset" button brings the active timer back to its starting time.
Visual Cues & Privacy
To help you stay on track, the large circular interface changes color based on your current phase: our signature Yellow for high-intensity Focus, and a calming Green for your restorative Break. Furthermore, like all utilities on AllTools, the Pomodoro Timer runs 100% locally on your machine. You do not need to create an account to save your custom duration settings, as they are managed locally within your browser's memory infrastructure.
